What
is Disk management?
Disk Management is a
Windows utility to manage all the hard drive partitions. It shows all the
details of each partition, like volume, layout, type, files system, capacity,
free space, % free and fault tolerance. If you want to change the drive letter,
format the hard drive, partition or re-partition the hard drive, you will use
this utility.
How
to open the Disk Management?
The first way, click
the start button and type diskmgmt.msc in the search box. Press Enter to open
it.
The second way, click
start menu, found and open the control panel, click System and
Security—Administrative tools—Computer Management---Disk Management.
How
to use the Disk Management?
The top section
contains the details of each partition, and the bottom sections contains all the
drive and their capacity and status. It distinguish the primary partition and
unallocated by the colors.
How
to shrink or extend a partition?
Right-click the
partition which you need to resize. You can choose to either extend or shrink
volume of this partition from the right-click menu. You can only shrink a
partition when there is enough free space, and you can only extend a partition
when there is unallocated space. If you cannot shrink or extend a partition,
you will see the shrink volume or extend volume option is grayed out. Disk
Management will not help you to extend the partition C, you need to use a disk
partition tool.
How
to create a new partition?
If there is unallocated
space, you can create a new partition. You just need to right-click the
unallocated space in black, and select the option of New Simple Volume from the
right-click menu. Follow the guides you can easily finish the create.
How
to delete a partition?
You can right-click the
partition to choose Delete Volume, but you cannot delete the system partition.

Right-click the
partition, you can choose the Format option from the right-click menu. Format
can change the files system and erase all the contents on this partition.
You also can directly
format it in My Computer, right-click the partition and choose to format it.
