As we are more and more
rely on computer and other storage devices, we have to store all kinds of data
on these devices. There are some files are some confidential files for us, and
other private files we do not want to be accessed by others. Then encryption is
a good choice to secure these files. You can encrypt your hard drive partitions
with BitLocker.
BitLocker is a disk
encryption feature in Windows Vista ans its later versions. It is designed to
encrypt your files so that they are unreadable by others. It is a hidden
feature in Windows. You can find this feature in several ways.
How
to enable the BitLocker for a drive partition or external hard drive?
First, you can input
encryption or BitLocker in the Run box to find it.
Second, you can find it
by Control Panel> System and Security> BitLocker Drive Encryption.
- In the Bitlocker Drive Encryption page, you should find the drive you need to encrypt. Click to turn on BitLocker to enable the encryption.
- Then you need to use a password to unlock the drive. You are required to enter the password for twice.
- Then you are required to back up your recovery key. You can choose to save to your Microsoft account, print the recovery key or save it to a file. This is to let you can use your recovery key to access your drive in case you forgot the password.
- Next, you need to choose the space you need to encrypt. You can choose to only encrypt the uses space or encrypt the entire drive.
- Choose the encryption mode. There are two encryption mode for your choice. The new encryption mode in Windows may be not compatible with older versions of Windows. If your external drive will be only used on the latest Windows 10, you need to choose the New encryption. Or you need to choose the compatible mode.
- Now the encryption has start. You will see the completed percentage.
- After the encryption ends, you are required to enter the password to unlock this drive. Or you can click the button of Enter recovery key if you forgot the password.
- Check your hard drive in My Computer, you will see this partition has a lock symbol.
After the external
drive has been encrypted successfully, you are required to enter the password
to unlock it every time you connect the drive to computer.
You can also manage the
encrypted drive in the BitLocker Window. You can change the password, turn off
it, backup your recovery key, remove password.
Encrypt the internal
and external hard drive is indeed a good way to avoid reveal of sensitive data,
and reduce the chance of accident data loss. Data loss on computer are
