Abnormal noise is a very important symptom of a hard
drive is likely to be corrupted. Generally, the hard drive is nearly silent but
some will make some tiny noises when using the computer. However, the sound of
fan even covers these tiny noises. Therefore, if you hear some abnormal noises
made by hard drive, you should pay attention to your data security and try to
diagnose the issues. If you hear the abnormal noises like clicking, grinding,
your hard drive is going to die.
What are the abnormal noises?
1. High-pitched whining sound
2. A high frequency vibration in the mounting hardware
3. Repeated, regular tapping, grinding or beeping.
4. USB drive clicking or beeping when it is connected
and also cannot be recognized.
Troubleshooting the Internal Hard
Drives
First of all, you need to determine if it is the hard
drive itself that caused the noises. Sometimes, the it is the ventilation fan
which get dirty or become unbalanced that cause the abnormal noise; or the motor
problems.
When you boot your computer, you may found some error
message on the screen. Or occasionally, your computer may have a sudden shut
down. In that case, you need to use check all the cables first and then use a
diagnostic tool to test the hard drive.
First, you should turn off the computer and connect
only the power cable to the drive. If the noise still exist, the drive has no
problem, it is other devices like a case fan caused such a problem.
Second, if the problem disappeared, turn on the computer
to see if there are still noises. If there is no noise, the hard drive has no
problem. Turn down your computer can then connect the data cable. In that case,
if there are noises, your should replace the data cable.
Third, if the are noise when you only connect the
power cable, your hard drive may have problem. You should try to install the
hard drive into other drive bay and only connect the power cable to know if the
noise still exist. If there are still noised, you may need to replace the
failed drive.
Troubleshooting External
Drives
The power shortage, that means the USB port doesn’t
provide enough power, may cause the external hard drive clicking. Please
connect the external hard drive to other USB ports, or connect it to a powered
USB hub to provide enough power.
Once you heard the abnormal noises when using
computer, you should try to troubleshoot the issues. If your hard drive is
going to die, you should back up all your data to avoid unexpected data loss.
Maintenance of hard dive is also very important, you should attention to
maintenance it in daily life.
Once you have accidentally deleted or lost some data
from your hard drive, you should recover them as soon as possible. You can only
recover them before the data overwritten occurs.
