What are bad sectors?
Once bad sectors happen, some of the data on the hard
drive may be lost or inaccessible. There are many reasons for bad sectors. Some
can be repaired while others cannot. Generally, there are two types of bad
sectors: logical bad sectors and physical bad sectors.
Physical bad sectors are caused by physical damage
on hard drive.
1. The head damage the hard drive.
2. Dust on the hard drive sectors
3. Natural wear out
4. Manufacturing error
Logical bad sectors are caused by software
issues.
1. Sudden power off of computer when the hard drive
are writing
2. Virus infection and malware
Ways to repair bad sectors
Take Windows 7 for example to repair the bad sectors:
First, open My Computer and find the hard drive you
need to repair.
Click the drive and choose the option of Properties
from the right-click menu.
Click the Tools tab in the Properties window.
Click Check now in the Error-checking part.
Check the box of Scan for and attempt recovery of bad
sectors in the Check Disk window.
Click start, and you will see the checking process.
Notice do not use your computer in this checking process.
Then you will see a window says that Your device or
disk was successfully scanned. Click more details to learn about the check disk
report.
When you found that your hard drive may have bad
sectors, you should back up your data on this hard drive at the first time, and
then try to fix them.
Here are some symptoms of bad
sectors:
1. blue screen or error prompts when you open files
2. Grinding sound when using the computer
3. Cannot boot properly
4. Cannot format your hard disk
Once you found abnormal situations on your hard drive,
you should be careful enough to back up your data. Bad sectors are sometimes
the symptoms of a dying hard drive.
